When you listen to music on any of your favorite mediums such as a cd, mp3 player, blu ray disc also public radio note that 98% of what you are hearing has either been processed or one would call a master. Mastering audio has changed in the last twenty years in a variety of ways in the past a vinyl cast was made from a plate that was cut as the artist recorded directly into the equipment then came magnet tape. With tape, music was captured by a console connected to a tape machine which intern was connected to another two-track tape machine this would yield the master, in the years to come this two-track tape machine would be replaced by DAT (digital audio tape). Cassette tapes and vinyl records that preceded the compact disc yesterday are long gone from your average store shelf now leaving the cd and its yellow and red book options the obvious choice for the average consumer. To truly master a song it should consist of making sure the audio sounds the same on as many media or players as best possible.
